Stenson wins The Open

He has also been third twice in the U.S. PGA and fourth in the U.S. Open and PGA.

Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson teed off Sunday in the final group at Royal Troon, the sun breaking through the clouds just as they hit their opening shots along the Irish Sea. As such, he's the first player to have ever shot 63 in the final round of the British Open.

Stenson's 20 under set the new low total to par set by Tiger Woods (19 under) in a British Open, and set the lowest aggregate total (264) in major championship history. "What a great match".

Where do you think the Henrik Stenson v Phil Mickelson battle ranks in terms of Open Championship drama?

Yet Mickelson, 46, was going to need time to process whether all that great play meant much since he lost, though his previous five major wins will no doubt be of some long-term comfort.

The 40-year-old Swede fired an 8-under 63 and outdueled Phil Mickelson in the final round at Royal Troon to capture the 2016 British Open Championship.

"I played well enough to win by a number of strokes and got beat", Mickelson is quoted as saying by BBC Sport. "Mike, this one's for you", said the 40-year-old as he addressed the crowd at Royal Troon. And I put in my best performance today.

"There's been many great players from my country tried in past years and decades and there's been a couple of really close calls", he said.

"I've always thought that he is one of the best ball-strikers in the game and that major championships are perfectly suited for him", Mickelson said.

Maybe birdie every hole.

He wound up with so much more Sunday.

Stenson nearly found one of the deep fairway traps with his final tee shot, but his ball pulled up a few feet short of the trap and he took advantage with another precise blow to the heart of the green.

"I got beat by 10 birdies".

"It hasn't quite sunk in yet, but I'm very happy", said Henrik Stenson. Like Day, this was also Stenson's first major win. Moreover, he showed a resolve that he'd never tapped into this deeply.

"I want to thank my wife, my family, my team, all the hard work has helped to make this possible and my caddie Gareth Lord".

"I knew that he would ultimately come through and win". Barely believable was the score of third-placed JB Holmes, who was a full 14 strokes behind Stenson on six under. If this was a better-ball match, they would have shot 59. I certainly was thinking about that. "I know I wanted to be more of Tom in that case than Jack".

Precarious calm in South Sudan's capital as foreigners flee
Renewed clashes between rival armed forces since 7 July have left hundreds of people dead and others displaced. There are concerns that what we are seeing is a repeat of what happened in December 2013.

His final stroke of this major masterpiece was a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole at Royal Troon that tumbled into the cup on the last turn. "I got beat by 10 birdies".

They traded birdies at No. 10, but Stenson fell into a tie when he bogeyed 11 with a three-putt.

An 18-foot birdie putt on the par-three 14th was one highlight, along with with a 50-foot birdie putt from off the green on the 15th.

Then came the crushing blow - Stenson putting from off the green, at least 40 feet, and making birdie at 15. "I thought I'd get one back there and be only one down with two hard holes to go".

Like a bar-room brawler, Mickelson was still swinging and missed an eagle chance by millimeters on the 16th to stay two behind.

He smiled, obviously referring to the Thursday putt on 18 for 62.

Mickelson, 46, was attempting to become the fourth-oldest major victor, and he gave it a good shot.He chased a 3-wood onto the green at the par-5 16th, and his eagle putt from 30 feet missed by less than an inch.
