Killing of 2 civilians triggers protests in Indian Kashmir

Fifty-two people - 50 civilians and two policemen - were killed in the present unrest in the Valley following the killing of Hizbul commander, Burhan Wani in a gunfight on July 8. The move, however, has been widely criticised by separatist groups, who accused the security forces of "harassing peaceful protestors" under the guise of maintaining law and order.

Authorities in Indian-held Kashmir extended a rigid curfew to most parts of the disputed Himalayan region on Friday in an attempt to prevent an anti-India protest in the main city. Another young protester was critically wounded and hospitalized in Srinagar, a police officer said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

More than 10 civilians and four security personnel were injured in the clashes in the Kangan area of Ganderbal district, reports said.

Defying the curfew, thousands of men and women carried his body to "Martyr's graveyard" where hundreds of Kashmiri militants and civilians killed during the last 26 years of fighting have been buried.

Separatists have already extended protest shutdown call till August 5 asking people to resume normal activities after 6pm each day.
