North Korea fires another missile towards Japan

North Korea fired two mid-range ballistic missiles on Wednesday morning, one of which flew some 1,000 km and fell into Japan's exclusive economic zone.

The second missile landed in the Sea of Japan (East Sea), some 250 kilometers (155 miles) off Japan's northern coast and within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

North Korea fired two intermediate-range missiles simultaneously, but one appeared to explode on take-off, according to the United States military.

The U.S. State Department spokesperson Anna Richey-Allen told Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency that North Korea's recent missile launches including Wednesday's violate multiple UN Security Council resolutions, and will be discussed at the UN.

"It imposes a serious threat to Japan's security and it is an unforgivable act of violence towards our security", he said.

North Korea is said to be seeking to develop a warhead small enough to be placed on a ballistic missile. As South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-Se stated the provocation by the North and their latest missile tests show the need for the THAAD deployment.

He stressed the importance of using dialogue and negotiations to solve the issue and pointed to "factors contributing to tension in the Korean Peninsula" in an apparent reference to the controversial USA antimissile system that Seoul and Washington agreed last month to install in South Korea.

On July 19 it launched three ballistic missiles-including one Rodong-in an exercise that the North said simulated a nuclear strike on the South.

The Rodong is a scaled-up Scud variant with a maximum range of around 1,300 kilometers (800 miles).

The launches will further escalate regional tensions that remain high after a series of missile launches and the decision by the United States to place a sophisticated anti-missile system in South Korea.

The missile was launched from an area in North Korea's South Hwanghae province, in the country's southwest.
