Viviani wins gold for Italy, Cavendish adds to British haul

The Team GB rider ended his wait for an Olympic medal, taking 194 points to finish behind Italian Elia Viviani, who took 207 points.

As it turned out, he rode the last 10 laps out on front, leaving Britain's Cavendish to take the silver 16 points behind and Hansen the bronze a further 10 points back.

A mid-race crash appeared to be of Cavendish's own making and he may yet face a protest from rivals or a sanction from race officials which could deny him the podium spot.

But Hansen messed up the elimination race at the end of the day, being the first of the 18-rider field to be knocked out.
