Almost 27 years ago, Jacob Wetterling was abducted at gunpoint while out for a bike ride with friends in St. Joseph, Minn.

Heinrich has always maintained he had nothing to do with Jacob's disappearance, and authorities have not publicly said it was Heinrich who led them to Jacob's remains. Heinrich, 52, had been previously arrested in October on federal child pornography charges. The Stearns County Sheriff's Office, assisted by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the FBI, the Stearns County Attorney's Office and the United States Attorney's Office are now in the process of reviewing and evaluating new evidence in the Jacob Wetterling investigation.

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office released no fresh information Sunday, but says authorities expect to be able to provide more details early this week.

A law enforcement official told the AP that a person of interest led authorities to a field in central Minnesota last week, which is where they eventually found the remains and other evidence.

Jacob's remains and other evidence were found by authorities on Wednesday and Friday in Stearns County. The masked assailant let his friends go unharmed, provided they flee; the 11-year-old Wetterling, however, the assailant held onto.

Patty Wetterling, Jacob's mother who became an advocate for families of missing children, told CNN in a text, "Our hearts are broken". The Jacob Wetterling Crimes Against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Registration Act was passed in 1994.

"Most parents know nothing about child abduction, so when it happens you just scramble for what's out there", Wetterling said in 2014.

At the time of his arrest previous year, as he had done since 1989, Heinrich insisted he was innocent in Jacob's disappearance.

Patty Wetterling released a statement to the media late Monday morning through Alison Feigh, program manager for the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center. "We didn't want Jacob's story to end this way". He was not charged in that case because the statute of limitations had run out, but he is set to face the pornography charges next month. Investigators first questioned Heinrich shortly after Jacob's abduction.
