Republican vice presidential candidate Mike Pence has had a narrow escape after his plane slid off the runway while landing at New York's LaGuardia Airport.

The 40 or so passengers, including Pence, evacuated through the back of the plane.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump called Pence to check on him after the landing, the campaign said.

"She added that there have been other hard landings on the Pence plane, and everyone on board thought this would be like the others, until they started skidding". Flights at LaGuardia Airport were suspended immediately, but resumed later on.

The plane was on a three-hour flight to NY from Fort Dodge, in Iowa, when it made the rough landing in heavy rain, causing the pilot slammed on the brakes.

The Indiana Governor said he was "fine" following the rough landing.

The take-off from Iowa was delayed for about two hours because of bad weather in NY.

Following the incident, Pence tweeted, "So thankful everyone on our plane is safe".
