Woman Woman named honorary United Nations ambassador for female empowerment

United Nations staff, some holding signs, stand in a silent protest against a UN meeting to designate Wonder Woman as an honorary ambassador. She said the decision to name Wonder Woman as an ambassador was effort to appease disappointed staffers.

"My character was for women and not against men", Carter said Friday before heading to United Nations headquarters in New York City for the honorary ceremony.

It can be argued that Wonder Woman has represented sexual bondage imagery for as long as she's represented gender equality, and this year, DC made her queerness official, though that development wasn't mentioned at the United Nations either. Present and accounted for on behalf of the timeless hero were Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, as well as the foremost recognizable faces of Lynda Carter and Gal Godot: the actors who've brought Wonder Woman to life onscreen in the past and present.

"Wonder Woman" may not have a lot of exposure in "Batman vs. Superman", but expect to see more of Princess Diana of Themyscira next year in "Wonder Woman" and "Justice League". It has received more than 1,000 signatures. The U.N. previously tapped Winnie the Pooh to be an honorary Ambassador of Friendship in 1998 and Tinker Bell as the honorary Ambassador of Green in 2009. As the U.N.'s materials pointed out, 60% of the world's illiterate people are female, so it's ironic that so many can't engage with her outside of TV or films.

Joining Nelson and Carter at the head of the room was Gal Gadot, who, in 2017, will become the first actor to take Wonder Woman to her own starring role in a feature film.

Nancy Coldham, co-chair of Equal Voice Toronto, which works to get more women elected in Canada, said she can see why the global body tapped Wonder Woman for the role. Although she ended up falling in love with a random man who washed up on the shores, before this encounter came about it is only common sense to understand that her former relations were in fact with other women. "Wonder Woman has always been a trailblazer for women's rights and we believe she can continue that legacy by expanding and deepening the dialogue around these critical issues". "I care for the people who care and I'm here for a wonderful cause today".

But among those thinking the glass was half empty was Shazia Z. Rafi, who previously headed an United Nations affiliated non-governmental organization and is now managing director of the consulting firm Global Parliamentary Services. We go to the park and then she goes, you know the kids, they try to make friends, so they go to the parents and they go, she goes "My mom is Wonder Woman", and then the parents would look at me strangely, not recognizing me, and I would go (shrugs) "you know, every mother is a Wonder Woman".

"I would invite her to join some of my colleagues who work at the United Nations on the front lines who see first-hand all the suffering all the women all over the world are enduring right now", Lecoq said.

Simultaneously, Wonder Woman is an ill-fitting choice for the recognition and empowerment of all women and young girls all over the world because she represents only a very small portion of that population, who are also discriminated against, but often enjoy greater privilege than the vast majority of women on the planet.
