After Democrats underperformed in the general election, with Hillary Clinton's surprise presidential loss to Donald Trump and Republicans holding a majority in both the House and the Senate, many members of the minority party have called to regroup with new leadership that distances itself from the Washington establishment and retains close ties with grassroots.

Calling for major change within his party, Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan announced on November 17 that he will run against Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California for House Minority Leader, a position Pelosi has filled since her party lost the majority in the House in 2010. "And they're going to give it a good look".

"Vote for me and I will dedicate all of my energy to lead us back into the majority", said Ryan, who is from an old working-class, steel area of northeastern OH, the type of region the Democrats want to wrest back from Republicans. He added: "I would think it has to be at the top". "I know I can do that".

Pelosi herself agreed with party leaders' decision to postpone the leadership vote until after Thanksgiving to determine what direction they want to take after last week's devastating election - which saw Democrats gain only six seats in the House when Pelosi speculated her party might get 20 or more. In the letter, Ryan said he spent hours talking to House members about his plans. Nancy Pelosi later this month for the role of House minority leader. "My main goal is to have a conversation as to what happened with the election and what we can do to grow as a party".
