Attorney general seeks resignations of 46 United States attorneys

Bharara, the Manhattan federal prosecutor who was asked by President Trump to remain in his post shortly after the election, was sacked after he refused an order to submit his resignation, The New York Times reported.

Bharara, an Obama appointee President Donald Trump publicly asked to stay on in November, tweeted from his personal Twitter account at 2:29 p.m. Saturday that he had been fired.

"[Bharara's] office is preparing to try a group of former aides and associates of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo in a wide-ranging bribery and bid-rigging case and has been investigating Mayor Bill de Blasio's campaign fund-raising as part of an inquiry into whether he or other officials exchanged official acts for political donations".

Then on Friday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that under the Trump administration, all 46 of those remaining would be required to hand up their letters of resignation.

"I'm troubled to learn of reports of requests for resignations from the remaining U.S. Attorneys, particularly that of Preet Bharara, after the President initiated a call to me in November and assured me he wanted Mr. Bharara to continue to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District".

The dismissal of the USA attorneys drew condemnation from New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who said in a statement that the move cast doubt on whether Sessions is interested in protecting the non-partisan work of federal prosecutors.

"The president-elect asked", the NY attorney had said at the time.

According to CNN, Acting Deputy Attorney General Dana Boente informed Bharara of his firing. "This saddens me because many of these people are great public servants and now they are being asked to leave".

Tim Purdon, a former US attorney for North Dakota in the Obama administration, recalled Friday that President Barack Obama permitted Bush appointees to remain on until their successors had been appointed and confirmed, the Associated Press reported.
