Commonwealth Games: Durban will not host in 2022

In yanking Durban's hosting rights, the Commonwealth Games Federation said the city had submitted information that was a "significant departure" from its original bid, PA reported.

The BBC quoted a spokesperson for Liverpool City Council as saying they had "already indicated to the government that we are very willing to host them (the 2022 Games) instead".

She said they will want to have it tidied up in a few months and they are optimistic there are cities interested and capable of meeting the requirements.

South Africa was forced to reconsider whether it could host the event due to doubts over the economic legacy of the Games and sluggish growth.

Liverpool has offered to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games if, as seems likely, Durban relinquishes the role.

A trip days later by Martin to try and end the impasse was markedly low-key, in contrast to the extravagant publicity that marked the award of the Games to Durban in September 2015.

In a telephone interview, the sports association head claimed that lack of funding from the South African government crippled preparations to the prestigious games.

"Nobody can take blame for this, we were all in good spirits about doing it so I don't think we can apportion blame".
