O'Rourke has been hinting for months that he would run for the Democratic nomination for Senate, and earlier today posted on Facebook: "Together, we can do something really big, and really powerful for the state of Texas-and for this country". "Congressman Beto O'Rourke has a big announcement to make on Friday".

An ardent proponent of term limits for members of Congress, he self-imposed a limit of four terms on his time in the House, meaning he would not be running for reelection in 2020.
