The Egyptian who weighed almost 500 kg and was possibly the world's heaviest woman successfully underwent a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery on March 7.

Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty weighed 78 stone (500kg) before being flown to Mumbai in India for the operation.

It may be recalled than Eman's weight was around 500 Kg, when she had arrived in Mumbai last month. She was bedridden all her life, unable to move or even roll over in bed.

After the medical procedure, Abd El Aty has been on a fluid diet.

The doctors are awaiting the results of the genetic tests for 36 monogenic disorders to find the reason behind her obesity. She lost 100 kg thanks to a strict liquid diet and physiotherapy within just days of her arrival, and on March 7, she underwent a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (removal of around 75 per cent of the stomach that will limit her consumption of food) that will help her lose close to 150 kg in a year and a half.

"She is now on oral fluids and accepting them well", says the hospital, where doctors also removed some of Abd El Aty's stomach fat.

Ahmed, who is from Alexandria, weighed 11 pounds at birth and was diagnosed with elephantiasis, a condition which causes body parts to swell due to parasitic infection. They want to correct all her medical associated problems and make her healthy before she travels back to Egypt. Doctors suspect that her obesity is linked to one or multiple genes of the 91 which are known to be connected to obesity.

Abd El Aty has suffered a stroke and faced a series of other serious ailments owing to her weight including diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension and sleep deprivation.

An Egyptian woman has undergone bariatric surgery in an effort to shed a hefty amount of weight.

Ahmed was initially refused a visa for India because of her inability to get to the embassy in person, until the process was expedited by India's external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj.

The bariatric surgery was performed Tuesday in Mumbai on over 1,000-lb.
