Nunes apologized to Democrats after surveillance comments: aide

The Democratic call comes on the heels of recent dramatic events in which Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, briefed President Trump at the White House after seeing documents that he says identified USA citizens in the Trump transition being caught up in incidental surveillance of intelligence agency targets.

Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) should step down as chair of the House Intelligence Committee. "The point was to cancel a public hearing".

On Monday the FBI Director James Comey announced to the committee the FBI is investigating the Trump campaign's links to Russian Federation and shot down President Trump's claims former President Obama wiretapped him.

The confirmation of an ongoing FBI investigation was a blow to the White House, which has described the Russian Federation probe as a ruse.

Nunes has since apologized, but many Democrats say Nunes-an "executive committee" member of Mr. Trump's presidential transition-is the wrong person to lead an inquiry. But documents obtained by the AP reveal Manafort had sought work from a Putin ally and proposed a campaign that he said could "greatly benefit the Putin government".

As NPR reported Wednesday, Nunes raised eyebrows when he said he had "new intelligence" from unidentified sources about members of the Trump campaign being caught up in surveillance of foreign targets.

"I have had no contacts or collusions with the Russians", Stone told ABC's "This Week."

It is not unreasonable to suspect that the actions of Rep. Nunes, who was a member of the Trump's transition team, are nothing more than a quite obvious attempt to coverup possible crimes in the White House or by members of the Trump team prior to and after the election.

"The chairman will need to decide whether he is the chairman of an independent investigation, which includes allegations of potential coordination between the Trump campaign and the Russians, or whether he is going to act as a surrogate of the White House, because he can not do both", said the ranking Democrat on the committee, Rep. Adam Schiff of California. The ongoing & increasingly public feud this past week between Nunes and Schiff suggests that some of those concerns may have been justified. Now what are becoming daily briefings are being done separately.

On Friday Nunes said he can't figure out why the names he's seen were not hidden.

"These reports that I've read are, for the most part, valuable intelligence", Nunes said.

"One of the key priorities of any investigation is to maintain its legitimacy and integrity", Jones said.

He made his White House visit, knowing that Trump is one focus of an FBI investigation into Russian meddling with our last presidential election. But Schiff used the same location to say he believed Nunes was acting at the bidding of the White House. "What other explanation can there be?" he said of the decision to postpone the hearing. A new date has not been set.

Maybe Nunes should not have brought this information to the White House before he briefed committee members.

GOP health care plan is a step backwards
Obama said in a statement come just hours before the House is expected to take a vote to repeal the massive health law. Reducing coverage choice is the opposite of what Republicans said the AHCA would do.

The FBI has also been probing Russian interference in the 2016 USA election.

The two also declined to respond to questions about former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manfort, who was sacked in August when it was learned he was under investigation for possibly accepting $12 million from a pro-Russia political party in Ukraine, and Roger Stone, a one-time Trump campaign adviser who has acknowledged contacts with WikiLeaks and Guccifer 2.0 over pirated Democratic party emails.

In a statement to the AP earlier this week, Manafort confirmed that he worked for Deripaska, but denied that the work had been to advance Russia's interests.

Nunes represents California's 22nd congressional district, and has served in the House of Representatives since 2003.

That's not what we saw in Monday's rare open Intelligence Committee hearing. "Let's see where this investigation goes for a few months and delay it", he said. "It will not be able to do so unless it can maintain its independence from the administration", he said.

"It's necessary to get both of them back down here before we can move onto other interviews", Nunes said.
