Commuters in New York City and New Jersey woke up to inches of snow Tuesday morning in a late-season storm that has affected millions of people in the northeastern U.S.

Tracking service reported 1,500 flight cancellations Monday and more than 4,600 Tuesday.

Metro areas from Washington, D.C., to Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston are seeing a combination of rain, ice and snow.

All big USA airlines have waived change fees for customers ticketed to fly to airports in the storm's path. Passengers are urged to contact their airline for flight schedule information and changes.

American Airlines and its American Eagle contractor Envoy Air together had canceled more than 300 flights Monday and 700 on Tuesday.

According to the Weather Channel, 600 flights were cancelled at O'Hare and Midway airports in Chicago Monday. But most planes scheduled to depart from Boston Tuesday have been called off, as have the majority of planned arrivals.

At John Wayne Airport, just one outbound flight, a 9:15 p.m. flight to Newark, was canceled.

Mostly departures to Chicago and NY have either been delayed or cancelled by the nasty weather.

In addition to snarling air travel across the region, Stella could make driving extremely unsafe, with some roads likely to become impassable as blizzard conditions develop. Dozens of smaller airports in the region also could be affected, with some possibly struggling to remain open if snowfall totals of 12 to 18 inches pile up across the region.
