ACC brings championship sites back to NC, Greensboro after HB 2 repeal

In response, the NCAA disqualified North Carolina from hosting neutral-site championship events for the 2016-17 academic year. At the time the NCAA said its board would have preferred an unconditional repeal of House Bill 2 and that a majority of the board "reluctantly" made a decision to return to North Carolina.

Along with the March Madness dates returning to N.C., the NCAA also approved several dates in Cary, including the D-II World Series from 2019-22, men's soccer College Cup in 2019 and 2021 and women's soccer College Cup in 2018 and 2020.

It appears the repeal of HB2 has paid off for North Carolina. For football, that means Charlotte will continue to be the home of the ACC title game through 2020.

The new law, called House Bill 142, partially repealed House Bill 2 by forbidding government entities from enacting rules on multiple-occupancy bathrooms, showers and changing rooms unless it's "in accordance with an act of the General Assembly". Of note, SUNYAC and Buffalo State will host the 2020 NCAA Division III men's ice hockey championship at HarborCenter in Buffalo.

Charlotte will also host first and second round games in 2018, which was previously decided.

The Dr Pepper ACC Championship Football Game has been a sellout in three of the six years it has been played in Charlotte.

The NCAA will return events to North Carolina. The women's tournament brings in more than $5 million and men and women's swimming and diving championship brings in more than $1 million, according to the Greensboro Convention & Visitors Bureau. But the NCAA ultimately offered a lukewarm endorsement of the compromise measure days later, saying the new law met "minimal" requirements to allow NCAA back into consideration for future events. The law, called House Bill 2, recently was repealed and replaced by the state legislature after the NCAA threatened to withhold its spotlight events from the state through 2022. In a basketball-crazed state, losing events such as the NBA all-star game and big NCAA tournament games was also a blow to residents' pride. HB 142 also says that local governments can not pass ordinances protecting LGBT people - or anyone else - from discrimination in employment or public places until 2020.
