Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley resigns amid sex scandal
The stunning resignation came after Bentley pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor violations of campaign finance law. She won, but died in office in 1968.
On Wednesday, the Alabama Ethics Commission found probable cause that the governor had violated ethics and campaign finance laws and forwarded its findings to Montgomery County's district attorney, Daryl Bailey, for further prosecution.
The attorney general's office announced the resignation Monday with a plea deal.
In his statement on Monday, Bentley apologized for his actions, but did not mention a relationship with Mason.
Alabama Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey was sworn in as the 54th governor at 6 p.m. He apologized for mistakes.

His office has scheduled a late afternoon appearance by Bentley at the Capitol.
Citing multiple unnamed sources, WHNT reported that Bentley will resign Monday.
Bentley is expected to resign Monday.

The person says Bentley is in good spirits over the decision to step down. He is accused of abusing his state powers to try to hide his romance. Mike Hubbard was removed as speaker of the state House after being convicted of ethics charges. It also corrects that Bentley lawyer Ross Garber represented former Gov. Mark Sanford of SC and Gov. John Rowland of CT during impeachment proceedings, not Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Special counsel Jack Sharman said Monday there was a question of the governor's "candor".
"I have spent the past year in deep, earnest prayer over our state and our people", Bentley said.
It was Bentley's apparent affection for one Alabaman in particular - former aide Rebekah Mason - that led to his downfall. "You are the only one", Bentley said in one text to Mason. His wife was also able to read his text message conversations with Mason, as his state-issued phone was linked to the state-issued iPad that he had gifted her.
In October, the Judiciary Committee demanded Bentley and several of his senior officials testify under oath for their impeachment investigation.
Bentley lawyer Ross Garber had argued that impeachment should be reserved for only the "most grave misconduct", noting that only two USA governors have been impeached since 1929, and both were indicted for serious felonies.
Bentley, 74, has battled to outlast a scandal involving recordings that surfaced in 2016 of him making sexually explicit comments to his former aide. The committee will decide whether to recommend impeachment. Over the weekend, the state's Supreme Court ruled that impeachment hearings could go ahead.
