Ann Coulter speech canceled by UC Berkeley, could happen off-campus

A defiant and furious Ann Coulter explained to WND in detail why she is vowing to show up and give a scheduled speech at U.C. Berkeley, even though the university canceled her appearance just hours earlier.

"We could not find a venue that would allow us to offer safety and security to the speaker, to those who would attend the event to our neighbors, as well as those who might choose to lawfully oppose her appearance", UC Berkeley spokesperson Dan Mogulof said.

In their letter, Biddy and Sutton said the university will work with the group to find an alternative time and date for often-provocative Coulter to speak in or near Berkeley.

Coulter is slated to at the Stanislaus County Republican Central Committee's Lincoln Day Dinner fundraiser at Modesto Center Plaza on April 28.

North Korea has scoffed at the idea of military intervention by outside nations to stop their nuclear testing. The American vice president is on a 10-day trip to Asia that has been dominated by the North Korea issue.

The group says such cancellations stifle free speech and made it increasingly hard to bring conservative thinkers to the Cal campus.

President Trump knocked the school in response to the incident, threatening to cut federal funds from the public university. Mogulof said they believe the university is exercising "unconstitutional prior restraint", by canceling Coulter's talk. When I said, 'yes, yes, yes, ' they canceled anyway.

Coulter herself said in a tweet Wednesday she's still planning on coming to Berkeley to speak and blasted the school for cancelling the event.

Brown noted that Coulter had agreed to a number of demands by the university - such as the speech would be delivered in the afternoon and only be open to students - while offering her own requests to be upheld by the university. "I'm an American. I have constitutional rights".

While Registered Student Organizations like yours are independent from the University, and have the right to invite whoever they'd like to speak here, the campus retains responsibility for ensuring safety and security during such events. In their letter, university officials also partly blamed the college Republican group for inviting Coulter and setting a date for the event - April 27 - without consulting the university. Activists on both the left and the right have used the city, and the school, as a symbol for First Amendment rights - and their limitations - in the new political climate.

"This is as clear-cut a case as it gets that public universities are using taxpayer dollars to shut down conservative speech, while allowing liberal speech only", YAF spokesman Spencer Brown wrote in the statement.

For that reason, when we learned through the newspapers that you had invited Ms. Coulter to speak here on April 27th, we immediately asked UCPD to conduct a comprehensive review of potential sites and security arrangements. "These Antifa clowns are going to be their to take cheap shot at us".
