Georgetown hires Patrick Ewing as men's basketball coach

Basketball legend Patrick Ewing's return to Georgetown University was a triumphant one after he accepted a job offer to lead his college alma mater's men's basketball program as its next head coach. They went just 14-18 this year and finished in ninth place in the Big East, causing the administration to do the seemingly unthinkable and get rid of the son of their most famous coach, who still wields significant influence over the athletic department. He retired in 2002 and has spent 13 seasons as an assistant coach in the National Basketball Association, most recently with the Charlotte Hornets.

Once his playing career ended in 2002, Ewing became an assistant coach, most recently with the Hornets, and he reportedly wanted to become an National Basketball Association head coach. He's worked with successful National Basketball Association coaches for over 10 years and yet he had to go take a job somewhere that, before this particular job, was not somewhere he wanted to be.

Miami Heat owner Micky Arison, whose team had many memorable battles with Ewing's Knicks, saw fit to chime in. Tim Bontemps of the Washington Post confirms the news about the Hoyas hiring of Patrick Ewing. Baseline expectations for Georgetown next season are to lose to very few Gulf Coasts, and, possibly, avoid losing to DePaul for the third time in five seasons.

Ewing emerged as the top choice for the position, according to people familiar with the search process, soon after Georgetown parted ways with John Thompson III.

Finally, after years of work Ewing will become a head coach.

Ewing graduated from Georgetown in 1985 after being named consensus first-team all-American for three straight years, beginning when he was a sophomore. The Hoyas reached the title game two other times during Ewing's playing career. In fact in 2014, the beloved New York Knicks, the same Knicks were Ewing dominated inside the paint, overlooked the star center in favor of newly retired point guard Derek Fisher.

JT3 was paid about $3.6 million a year, and that was after he had success as Princeton University's head coach for four seasons.

If finalized, Ewing's hire would send ripples across the Big East Conference recruiting landscape.
