Local activists to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on death anniversary

King was in New Orleans on more than one occasion, and three of our photographs here date from those trips. He was assassinated the next day at the old Lorraine Motel.

"You have no f-ing right to co-opt the legacy of Dr. King almost 50 years after you murdered him", tweeted John Weiss, a writer and filmmaker.

Tuesday's "Fight Racism, Raise Pay" protest was among two dozen in cities across the country. In the last 50 years we've passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, Title IX and nationwide marriage equality.

"We are not those who believe the bad lies that the best way to better America is to attack public education and attack Muslims and attack immigrants and attack living wages", said Barber, progressively raising his voice. "How in the world can America attack refugees when we sing 'God bless America, shed his grace on us, ' but we don't have grace for immigrants?"

"We believe there's still some unfinished business that we are obligated and have to do to put in place for these men who have given their lives to the city of Memphis". And we must rejoice as well, for surely this is the first time in our nation's history that a significant number of its religious leaders have chosen to move beyond the prophesying of smooth patriotism to the high grounds of a firm dissent based upon the mandates of conscience and the reading of history.

"You are a colossal fraud and an evil, vicious one at that." said the typewritten letter, which was reportedly accompanied by tapes of King's alleged extramarital affairs.
