A trainee IAS officer allegedly drowned in a swimming pool while trying to save a lady colleague during a party at an institute run by the ministry of external affairs late last night, police said.

According to eyewitnesses, a lady officer accidentally fell into the pool and the officers, including 30-year-old Dahiya, jumped in to rescue her, police said.

"The lady officer was safely pulled out but Dahiya went missing. Soon, he was discovered floating", the officer said.

The guard said it were the students at the institute who took Dahiya to the hospital at around 1 a.m on Tuesday morning. Police said Dahiya's batchmates, including IAS, IRS and IFS officers, were having a get-together after a convocation ceremony at South Block. Dahiya's uncle, two elder brothers Surender and Ashok Dahiya both engineers and his parents, who reside in Sonipat, Haryana, were informed about the incident.

The Chief Minister has conveyed her sympathies to the bereaved family particularly wife of Ashish Dahiya and prayed for his eternal solace. It is said that they planned to have swimming in the pool in the Institute.

A team of senior officers of New Delhi district examined the spot to collect evidence and to record statements of relevant persons regarding investigation of this tragic episode.

The deceased, Ashish Dahiya, was a Jammu and Kashmir cadre officer and had won the Directors Gold Medal during his IAS training around a fortnight back. He had secured 53rd rank in the UPSC exam.

He had finished his training from Mussoorie recently and was supposed to join duty in Srinagar. Ishwar Singh, DCP (South) ruled out foul play saying doctors have cited drowning as the cause of death.

He served in the Customs and Central Excise till past year and then qualified for the IAS. His family has reached Delhi.
