Israel says Palestinian hunger strike leader ate in secret

The Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli jails continue their open hunger strike for the 23rd consecutive day on Tuesday, in protest against their poor detention conditions.

Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails are now on hunger strike over their conditions.

An unnamed IPS official told Channel 2 on Monday that video clips of Barghouti eating were obtained as part of an IPS scheme to induce the hunger strike's leaders to eat by hiding food in their cells.

Hundreds of Palestinians in Israeli jails have been on a hunger strike since April 17.

"The prisoners are familiar with Israel's lies and games, and the video they released signals the beginning of [Israel's] fall", she said.

Supreme Court of India had rendered N Srinivasan ineligible to attend ICC meeting as BCCI representative. Meanwhile, the selection committee of the BCCI is all set to meet in Delhi on Monday.

The image was later removed from the Facebook page, though it was still found on the page of at least one local branch.

In a public apology posted to its global Facebook page, Pizza Hut apologised for the "completely inappropriate" advertisement and said that it "does not reflect the values of our brand".

In response to the ad, a large number of Palestinians called for a boycott of the pizza chain on social media. It was completely inappropriate and does not reflect the values of our brand.

In a press conference Monday, the wife of strike leader Marwan Barghouthi, Fadwa, stated, "We are not surprised by this fake video, it is all part of Israel's psychosocial warfare against the detainees in particular, and the Palestinian people in general". "The local franchisee in the country removed it immediately and the relationship with the agency that posted it was terminated, and we truly regret any hurt this may have caused", it said.

Supporters of Marwan Barghouti say the video released earlier this week and purportedly showing him snacking is a fabrication meant to break the prisoners' morale.

"Pizza Hut is ridiculing the prisoners' strike", activist Alaa Abu Diab wrote on Facebook, using the hashtag #boycott_pizzahut.

Barghouti was also photographed furtively eating food in his cell during a previous prisoner hunger strike in 2004.

The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which calls for boycotting Israel until it ends the occupation of Palestinian territories, said it supported calls to snub Pizza Hut.

According to polls, Barghouti is the most popular political figure in the occupied West Bank, and would likely replace current Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas if elections were held today.
