Microsoft unveils a big Windows update and virtual reality hand controllers

One of the highlight features coming as part of the Windows 10 Falls Creators Update later this year is called OneDrive Files On-Demand. That's the placeholder name for Microsoft's next big Windows 10 update, which as you might guess, will roll out this fall.

Terry Myerson, Microsoft's executive VP of the Windows and devices group, debuted the latest update today during Microsoft's Build developer conference.

Specific feedback and updates to the known issues with the Windows 10 SDK Preview build 16190 are available via the developer forum.

The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update will introduce Project Neon - which is now being called the Microsoft Fluent Design System.

Microsoft is also tweaking one of the most basic features of a computer: copy and paste.

- With Timeline, you'll be able to pick a time, say last Wednesday morning, and see what files, apps and sites you had opened, allowing you to easily jump back to what you were doing.

Expect some cracking new ways to work with iOS and Android, including being able to pick up with some apps on mobile devices exactly where you left off (Office?) and a cloud clipboard that can move stuff between the devices. Microsoft has introduced Story Remix feature to the Photos app. Microsoft will offer iTunes in its Windows Store at the end of this year. The so-called online files from OneDrive will show up in the Windows file picker, alongside apps that are stored locally.

Microsoft will employ the activity data collected along the way to support Timeline, a feature for bringing up old application sessions. Microsoft also announced it is working with SUSE Linux and Fedora Linux running on the Windows Subsystem for Linux to bring them to the Windows Store. If you're connected, clicking them will automatically download and open them, just like a local file. "If a cross-platform app is available, we'll help the user get it installed", he said. Microsoft stated that developers in the US and Canada can pre-order an Acer ($299 USD) or HP ($329 USD) Windows Mixed Reality Headset Developer Edition starting today from the Microsoft Store for delivery later this summer.
