New Plan for Troops in Afghanistan Goes to White House Next Week

The Defense Department will deliver an updated Afghanistan strategy proposal to the White House within the next week detailing the military's tactics in the region, senior leaders of the force told Congress on Thursday.

A plan for more troops would be part of a broader set of recommendations on how to adjust the United States' military approach in Afghanistan.

Gen. John Nicholson, the top US commander in Afghanistan, and other senior military leaders have repeatedly described the fight in Afghanistan as a stalemate.

The US now has around 8,400 soldiers in Afghanistan with about another 5,000 troops from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

The troops, which could consist of special forces personnel and more conventional soldiers, would be part of the NATO-led mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan army and police force in its fight against the Taliban but would also aid the United States counterterrorism effort there as well.

The train, advise and assist mission is a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation mission, and Nicholson has said the few thousand troops he is short could come from either the United States or North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries.

U.S. troops have been present for almost 16 years in Afghanistan, where the government backed by its coalition allies are battling a resilient Taliban as well as other terror groups including ISIS.

US military officials have said they need more forces to meet the growing training and advising mission.
