PM Modi's two-day Gujarat visit to begin today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to home state Gujarat, where elections are expected by the end of the year.

According to the BJP, events across the country would also be addressed by Union Ministers, parliamentarians, BJP chief ministers, state ministers and several senior party leaders. "There should be more production in less land", Modi said while releasing a two-part book series on renowned agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan at his residence here. He said with a slew of developmental projects in the pipeline, Kandla port will assert itself on the global trade map and will have connection with Iran's Chabahar port once that is developed.

The Prime Minister also noted that Bhuj would get a modern bus port, like other cities in Gujarat. This spirit continues even today. Good ports are essential for India's progress.

The Prime Minister added that the government is working towards this direction, to fulfil its "dream" of doubling farmer's income by 2022, when India celebrates its 75th Independence Day.

PM Modi speaks to French President-Elect Macron
Such talk is premature, though, for whilst Macron may have won the battle against the far-right, the war has only just begun. She said she hoped and believed that cooperation with Macron would progress "in exactly this spirit".

Mazumdar said people across the globe can also log on to the broadcaster's website to listen to Modi live.

Later in the evening, the Prime Minister inaugurated a pumping station built on Narmada branch canal in Bhachau for the Kutch region. The pumping station is huge and it has been created to lift water 18-meter high, which will be directed into the KBC channel that flows towards Anjar and Mandvi.

This was Prime Minister Modi's second visit to Kutch after becoming Prime Minister in 2014.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will kick-start the programme from Guwahati on May 26.

The New York Police Department said the driver drove along the sidewalk for at least three blocks, hitting pedestrians as he went. Friends of a man suspected of plowing his vehicle into pedestrians in Times Square say he'd been going through a rough time.

While addressing the public, PM Modi said that ports are vitally important for economic growth.

"Over the years, Gujarat has allocated thousands of crores that were meant for the poor to ensure arrival of Narmada water in Kutch".

Swaminathan said the country has not seen any starvation after the "great Bengal famine" but "there is no time to relax" as there is "so much to do" to ensure "nutrition security wherein everybody gets balanced food, clean drinking water and sanitation". Modi reached Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar for night halt and will formally inaugurate annual meeting of African Development Bank on Tuesday before heading back to Delhi.
