Apple's Siri Speaker is reportedly in the works

Apple has commenced manufacturing of its rumoured Siri-controlled smart speaker, according to reports on Wednesday, which also outlined how the device could better those now on the market.

Apple's speaker is going to use the company's Siri assistant, and will be capable of controlling internet-connected appliances through Apple's HomeKit platform, according to the report.

For Apple, a smart speaker is a long time coming.

It was reported earlier this month that Apple employees were testing the Siri speaker in their homes for several months. Now, in the run-up to WWDC, new tidbits have emerged.

Has the delay in entering the market allowed Apple to get this release just right? In addition to generating virtual surround sound, the speakers are purportedly louder and more crisp than rival offerings. Eagles to bagels says Siri Speaker won't be cheap like Amazon's Dot ($49.99), Google Home ($129.99) and maybe not even like the original Echo. The company also considered including sensors that would measure a room's acoustics and automatically adjust audio levels.

Rumors about a "Siri Speaker" from Apple that would compete with Amazon Alexa and Google Home took a serious leap forward on Tuesday. The speaker would likely be tucked into Apple's "Other Products" category, which now includes devices like the Apple Watch, Apple TV and AirPods. Whether it's using Apple Pay to buy items via voice commands, playing your favorite songs through Apple Music, or finding your lost iPhone, the company wants to offer a competitive product that will keep users from defecting to similar offerings from Google and Amazon.

Sales, though, are unlikely to begin until later in 2017.

Bloomberg said the new product may make its debut during WWDC on June 5, but that Apple won't launch the device until later in the year.
