Islanders Acquire Jordan Eberle From Oilers for Ryan Strome

It was evident this past season that the departure of Kyle Okposo impacted the offense in a way that Snow didn't believe it would, and no player suffered more from the loss of Okposo than Tavares.

Though the rumors did not necessarily impact his on-ice production, Eberle admitted to being happy when a trade was finally consummated Thursday. He's scored 45 goals and 126 points in 258 career games with the Islanders. The trade finally gives NY a high-end winger to pair with center John Tavares on its top line next season.

Eberle, a veteran of seven seasons with the Oilers, had 51 points in 2016-17 after posting 47 in 69 games the previous season, a slight drop from back-to-back 60-point seasons starting in 2013-14.

Eberle has been an alternate captain with the Oilers since the 2012-13 season. But Thursday's deal gives Eberle the chance to start anew in NY.

As far as the deal is concerned, it's not as if acquiring Eberle cost the Islanders all that much, either. In that sense, the deal also offers Strome a fresh start in Edmonton, one that will come with the chance to be part of a team on the rise and potentially find a fit alongside other high-skill players on a promising Oilers squad.

In addition to Warmbier, three other USA nationals remain in North Korean custody on various allegations of espionage. Warmbier said he accepted the offer because his family was "suffering from very severe financial difficulties".

The Islanders selected Strome fifth overall in the 2011 NHL Draft.

Strome, who recorded only 28 and 30 points the past two seasons after a breakthrough 2014-15 in which he notched 50 points, has a $2.5 salary cap hit heading into RFA status next summer. Eberle is signed for two more seasons, at a cap hit of $6-million. Rising star Leon Draisaitl is due for a huge raise when his entry-level contract finishes July 1 and league MVP Connor McDavid is entering the final year of his entry-level deal. NY has been looking to add a big name presence up front for a while, as they're hoping to make big strides over the coming year to maximize their chances of keeping star captain John Tavares, who is entering the final year of his current deal.
