Dhaka - Several thousand men and women joined an open session for Yoga in Bangladeshi capital Dhaka to mark the International Day of Yoga on Wednesday.

The worldwide day for yoga is celebrated annually since its inception in 2015.

Lucknow is holding celebration for International Yoga day and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath started the celebration with nearly 50,000 participants joining them.

The 80 minute Yoga session was in full swing despite the heavy rain.

On this occasion PM Narendra Modi has urged everyone to make yoga a persistent part of their lives.

Though Yoga is a simple form of exercise, it can keep one healthy, physically and mentally, Prakash Javadekar asserted.

"Yoga, which connects body, mind and soul, has played a big role in connecting the world too", Modi said in a heavily-fortified Ramabai Ambedkar Maidan, later adding that yoga was necessary as salt is to life. Last year, Prime Minister Modi had joined school children and Yoga followers in the northern city of Chandigarh.

Modi conveyed his greetings to all the people joining the global yoga day celebration all over India and thanked the UP government foe hosting the celebration at such large scale in spite of heavy rainfall.

Later, Chief Minister N Biren and Prakash Javadekar flagged off "Run for Yoga" to encourage people to practice Yoga in the State.
