Samsung to open SC plant as recent United States investment passes $10bn

Samsung employs about 3,000 people in its Austin factory and has invested a total of US$17 billion since the plant began operating in 1998, according to the company.

Home appliance preferences vary greatly by region and this facility will allow Samsung to more quickly and efficiently adapt to the high demands and regional needs of their largest, fastest growing home appliance market, according to a Samsung statement.

"For almost 40 years, Samsung has steadily expanded our operations in the United States, creating thousands of jobs and investing billions of dollars in cutting-edge manufacturing facilities, research and development", said Samsung Electronics America President and CEO Tim Baxter.

The investment will generate 954 local jobs by 2020, including engineers and craftsmen, the company said.

The plant will manufacture home appliances, including washing machines, starting early next year.

The facility, which will manufacture premium home appliances for the U.S. market, will eventually employ 954 workers.

Samsung on Wednesday said the head of its home appliance division, Yoon Boo-keun, signed a letter of intent in Washington D.C. with U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.

"With this investment, Samsung is reaffirming its commitment to expanding its United States operations and deepening our connection to the American consumers, engineers and innovators who are driving global trends in consumer electronics". President Donald Trump caught wind of Samsung's deliberations in February, thanking the company and asserting that the USA would "love to have you". The plant will create more than 950 jobs over three years.

The board of Santee Cooper, South Carolina's state-owned utility, approved a $2.75 million grant for Samsung on Monday, said spokeswoman Mollie Gore.

"We're expanding our footprint in the United States to meet the surging demand for our products in that market and to increase the speed with which we can adapt our products to the preferences of American consumers", she said.
