Scalise was shot Wednesday morning as a gunman sprayed bullets into a GOP congressional baseball practice.

When the president intoned three words he said have brought Americans together for generations - "Let's play ball" - cheers rang out. His condition is critical, and he will require additional operations.

"We are especially appreciative of the strong outpouring of love and support from our neighbors, friends, from across Louisiana and across the country", Jennifer Scalise's statement said.

Scalise is still in critical condition but is doing better, according to a statement from MedStar Washington Hospital Center where the congressman is now confined.

Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was at Wednesday's practice and gave medical help after the shooting, said it would have "been awful" if the game had been canceled, and said Scalise would want it to go on.

The person did not disclose the names, but said those listed had been briefed.

Scalise, 51, was taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center suffering from a single rifle shot to the left hip. He declined to describe specific internal injuries.
