'Scalise took a bullet for all of us'

MedStar Washington Hospital Center Director of Trauma Dr. Jack Sava speaks during a news conference in Washington, Friday, June 16, 2017, about the condition of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of La. who was shot in Alexa.

As congressional Republicans and Democrats joined Thursday night in their annual baseball game, played this year in Scalise's honor, word came from the hospital that he remained in critical condition, but had "improved in the last 24 hours".

Sava earlier said the Louisiana congressman had been at "imminent risk of death" when he was first brought into the hospital on Wednesday, and he received many units of transfused blood.

The man who shot USA congressman Steve Scalise and others at a congressional baseball practice earlier this week had with him a piece of paper with doodles and the names of three lawmakers, according to a person familiar with the case. He was shot in the hip with a rifle round, and suffered internal bleeding and damage to internal organs.

The shot fired at Scalise left perhaps hundreds of bullet fragments internally, many of which may never be removed because surgery might be more unsafe than leaving them in place, Sava said.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center announced on Thursday that Congressman Steve Scalise (R-La.) had a second surgery and was still in critical condition.
