UNFPA head Babatunde Osotimehin, champion of girls and women, dies

Addis Ababa - The Economic Commission for Africa joined the greater United Nations family Tuesday in mourning the sudden death of United Nations Population Fund Executive Director, Babatunde Osotimehin, who passed away in his NY home Sunday evening.

The 68-year-old at a time served as Provost of the College of Medicine at the University of Ibadan before serving as NACA Director, where he was elevated to Health Minister by President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He was also a former minister for health and ex-head of the National Agency for Control of AIDS.

"Secretary-General António Guterres and other senior United Nations officials have paid tribute to Babatunde Osotimehin, the executive director of the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) ..."

Osotimehin was born February 6, 1949, in Ogun State, Nigeria.

Further, it was gathered that the deceased, who was with his son, Dr Babajide Osotimehin, reportedly took ill suddenly and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, but gave up soon after.

According to him, Osotimehin's death is an irreparable loss not only to Nigeria but to the United Nations and the entire global community.

Focusing on women's health in across the world, including Iraq, Nepal, South Sudan, Syria, the Philippines, Ukraine, and Yemen, UNFPA - under Dr Osotimehin's leadership - has dramatically improved the lives of women and girls in some of the world's most fragile places.

He also chaired the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council on the Demographic Dividend and he was a Global Agenda Trustee for the Forum's Global Challenge on Economic Growth and Social Inclusion.
