Another eyewitness told PM news that other banks in the area, especially those on Warehouse Road, have closed down for business to avoid any attack from the mob.

"The police man ran into sterling bank seeking refuge with the mobile unit attached to the bank, the angry mob then set fire to a auto within the bank premises which slightly affected the building".

Angered by the incident, the mob, most of which were said to be the driver's colleagues, reportedly set the bank on fire and also the nearby bank building when they learned that the policeman was hiding there.

"The fire at the banks was put out by the police and other security agencies as the tanker driver, identified as Azeez was rushed immediately to the hospital for treatment", he said.

Police Authorities in Lagos State say one of its official accused of shooting a tanker driver in Apapa Wharf has been arrested. However, unconfirmed reports said he was angered by the refusal of the driver to give money demanded, which is common practice between security agents and truck drivers in Apapa.

It was gathered that the firemen had to leave the area for fear of being brutalised by the tanker drivers and their fire trucks vandalised.

Another driver was said to have also been shot while on the verge of pouring fuel on the fleeing policeman in a move to set him ablaze.
