Trump administration will certify Iran still complying with nuclear deal

US lawmakers are calling on Congress to pass more sanctions authorities to target Iran following President Donald Trump's move to keep the nuclear deal in place for now.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, in NY on Monday to attend a United Nations forum on development, said he has yet to discuss the nuclear deal with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Mr. Trump has criticized the nuclear accord as a "horrible" deal and pledged during the campaign past year to withdraw the USA from the pact.

"The Secretary of State and the President intends to emphasise that Iran remains one of the most unsafe threats to the U.S. and to regional security", another senior administration official said.

The U.S.is also considering sanctions against Iranian entities in order to target the country's ballistic missile program and state sponsorship of terrorism.

The administration is also looking at ways to strengthen the nuclear deal and more strictly enforce it, the official said, citing concerns that the deal over time would let Iran openly pursue industrial-scale nuclear fuel enrichment.

But Steve Bannon, Trump's strategic advisor who keeps a list of Trump's campaign pledges on a white board in his White House office, said Trump should follow through with his promise to tear up the deal.

"Never, ever, ever, in my life have I seen any transaction so incompetently negotiated as our deal with Iran", Trump said September 9, 2015, during a Tea Party rally.

"We're in a period where we're going to be working with our allies to explore options for addressing the JCPOA's flaws, which there are many", the official said.

"We do expect that we will be implementing new sanctions", he said.

"There is no communication between me and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, but this does not mean that it is impossible". What's more, the USA intelligence community feels that Iran is pushing the edges, but overall is in compliance Iran deal. In meetings with his national security cabinet, the president has never been keen on Obama's nuclear deal. That assessment carries no legal force, while Trump's certification that Iran is technically complying clears the way for sanctions to remain lifted. It does not address Iran's ballistic missile program or any other aspects of its military activities or human rights record.

As a result, he said, the Office of Foreign Asset Control "has been reluctant to provide straight-forward answers to those who want to do business with Iran because it was anxious that a straight-forward answer would undermine the sanctions" that have not been lifted.

Since the historic deal was signed in Vienna, the IAEA has repeatedly confirmed the Islamic Republic's compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA, but some other parties, especially the U.S., have failed to live up to their undertakings.

Under the deal struck by Obama and other world leaders, Iran agreed to roll back its nuclear program - long suspected of being aimed at developing atomic weapons - in return for billions of dollars in sanctions relief.

"We receive contradictory signals", Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Monday at the Council on Foreign Relations before the decision was announced.
