Acer unveils fanless Switch 7 with dedicated graphics, affordable Spin 5 convertible

Acer has launched the Switch 7 Black Edition, which it claims is the world's first fanless 2-in-1 design to feature a discrete GPU. The Switch 7 Black Edition sports a 13.5-inch display with a sharp 2256 x 1504 (201 PPI) resolution in 3:2 aspect ratio. Such an achievement is thanks to Acer Dual LiquidLoop cooling tech, which keeps the Black Edition from overheating despite the lack of a fan. This is also the first system from Acer to feature its AutoStand, a fancy name for a patented kickstand that can be auto-deployed and auto-retracted, providing single-handed operation.

New entries in Acer's ultraslim and ultralight notebook range Swift and its convertible notebook range Spin were unveiled at the event, as well as a new version of the Switch 7 2-in-1 notebook introduced previous year.

Unlike the Spin 5, which is only capable of, well, spinning and moving from laptop to tablet mode with its rigid keyboard concealed, the 13.5-inch Switch 7 can ditch the keyboard entirely if you so choose, weighing less than 2.5 pounds when the productivity accessory is detached. It is powered by 8th Gen Intel processor with up to 16GB DDR4 RAM and up to 512GB SSD storage. Ultra-light magnesium-lithium alloys are used for both the top and bottom covers, while the palm rest area uses magnesium-aluminum alloys for enhancing the sturdiness.

Microsoft and Amazon partner to integrate Alexa and Cortana digital assistants
It appears that both companies have simply created skills on each others platforms to enable the basic integration. Soon, Amazon's Alexa and Microsoft's Cortana will be able to work side-by-side on on Echo smart home speakers.

Peter Han, Vice President, Partner Devices and Solutions, Microsoft Corp said, "The new generation of Swift, Spin and Switch notebooks from Acer intersect functionality and mobility with the power and performance of Windows 10". It too uses Intel's latest 8th-generation of Core processors and offers an up to 8 hour battery life.

The Swift 5 meanwhile is designed with true portability in mind. The device will go on sale in North America in December starting at $999, in EMEA in December starting at €1,099, and in China in November starting at ¥7,499. On the inside, it comes with an 8th generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, a tiltable (-5 to 30 degree) FHD IPS display, Qi wireless charging pad and Acer VisionCare technology.

Last, but certainly not least, is the Acer Spin 5, a lightweight convertible machine that prices in cheaper than all the other laptops revealed during the announcement.

The screen on both models is touch-sensitive and both come supplied with Acer's Active Stylus, and the 15-inch model gets another exclusive feature in the form of Dolby Audio processing technology and two forward-facing speakers.
