In this weeks' Queer & There, we heard from a transgender veteran who spoke out in opposition to President Trump's ban on transgender people entering or serving in the U.S. Military.

". The military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and can not be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail", Trump tweeted in July.

Trump directed the Pentagon on Friday to implement a ban on transgender individuals from enlisting in the military, which he first announced in a tweet.

This study is not new to the military.

A 2016 Rand study, commissioned by the Department of Defense and cited by Carter last summer, estimated there might be between 1,320 and 6,630 transgender service members on active duty.

What do you think of transgender service people in the military?

The White House had said that transgender people would be allowed to continue serving until Mattis had completed such an analysis.

The overall basis for the president's directive was "national security considerations", according to a senior White House official.

This inaccurate reporting is playing into a patently bogus strategy to make it appear that there is going to be some new "study" that will legitimate what is already a forgone conclusion: the discriminatory banning of military service by transgender people, based on a characteristic that has no bearing on their fitness to serve.

Despite what some headlines might suggest, Mattis isn't exactly putting a freeze on Trump's transgender policy. Similarly, Politico's Eliana Johnson called Mattis' statement "kind of a rebuke" of Trump's announcement during an appearance on MSNBC.

A McCain spokeswoman declined to comment beyond McCain's statement on potential defense amendments.

Trump's order has also resulted in several lawsuits filed on behalf of current and future United States military soldiers.

"It's not a surprise that there is considerable bipartisan concern about what's going on because the White House admitted that the original tweets were for an invalidly political objective, which is why you had eight senators from the Republican Party speak out", said Aaron Belkin, director of the Palm Center, which conducts research on sexual minorities in the military.

Trump's order by tweet on July 26 caught the Pentagon by surprise.
