Houston police Sgt. Steve Perez drowns in Harvey floodwaters

Houston police officer Steve Perez drowned in floodwaters while trying to make his way into work to help with the emergency response to Harvey, officials announced on Tuesday (Aug 29). Crews are working to recover his body. Words can not adequately express the sense of loss the Perez family and their extended Houston Police family are experiencing.

His eyes filling with tears and his voice cracking with emotion, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo pledged that the city and department would give the slain officer, who drowned in the flooding, full honors.

"He could not find a path, and you can imagine heavy rain, dark roadways", Acevedo explained.

"Unfortunately in the darkness, Sgt. Perez drove into an underpass that's about 16.5 feet, drove into the water and he died in a flood, in a drowning-type event", Acevedo said. He said officers kept watch over the area overnight.

Acevedo spoke about how Perez's wife and father-in-law implored him not to go into work Sunday.

The 34-year department veteran's body was recovered from his vehicle early Tuesday morning.

The administration also called on his government to restore representative democracy, free political prisoners and end repression. Maduro accused the U.S. of imposing a "financial blockade" on Venezuela earlier this week.

Sergeant Perez was a 34-year veteran of the Houston Police Department.

"He was trying different routes, and took a wrong turn", one unnamed official told the newspaper.

More than a dozen people have died in the days since Harvey slammed into the Texas coast on Friday, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
