The Red Cross says some volunteers decide to stay for months depending on the need.

As of Sunday afternoon, the storm killed at least five people, injured dozens, destroyed homes and businesses and left more than a million without power.

Thousands of volunteers are heading to Texas to help with relief after Hurricane Harvey, including some from West Michigan. More volunteers are on standby to deploy should the need arise. The two volunteers from the Pioneer valley are among the 12 disaster relief men and women from throughout MA.

The center says Harvey has sustained wind speeds of 130 miles per hour (209kph) as the powerful storm churns off the Texas coast. Passengers aboard the Carnival Freedom told CNN they were anxious about their vehicles, which were left at Galveston's port.

Hurricane Harvey made landfall along the Texas Gulf Coast with over 100 miles per hour winds and up to 35 inches of rain, leading to devastating and life-threatening flooding.

Red Cross volunteers are headed from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to those states all weekend, along with emergency response vehicles.

They expect to be on the assignment for 2 weeks. The hurricane has made landfall Friday and caused severe flooding.

Nathan DeVault with the American Red Cross National Capital Region said about 18 volunteers have been deployed to either Texas or Louisiana.

Some predictions show 35 inches of rain could fall in south Texas by Monday, and the full extent of the damage won't be known for days.
