Lance Lynn critical of Cardinals after Mike Leake trade

The Mariners have acquired nine-year veteran starting pitcher Mike Leake from St. Louis. He also has pitched for the Reds and Giants.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have acquired minor league shortstop Rayder Ascanio from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for right-handed pitcher Mike Leake and worldwide cap space totaling $750,000 for the current global signing period.

Leake was traded to Seattle on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Essentially, the Mariners pick up the 3 years Leake has left and will be on the hook for $36 million. The Mariners (66-67) are three games out of the second wild-card spot in the American League and the Cardinals (66-65) are 5 1/2 games out in the NL wild-card race. There is also a mutual option in play for the 2022 season which would earn Leake a $5 million buyout if the Mariners made a decision to cut ties with the veteran starting pitcher.

"Mike gives us an experienced starter that will help us as we navigate our way towards a playoff spot this season", Mariners president and general manager Jerry Dipoto said in a statement.

Leake has been ultra dependable since making his major league debut in 2010, starting 228 games, which trails only Dodgers star Clayton Kershaw (231) for National League starts over that period. Since 2012, he's made at least 30 starts in a season and has a chance to do so in 2017.

After a great start to the season, Leake has struggled mightily. He will finish his career as a Cardinal with a 16-24 record and a 4.46 ERA. The St. Louis Cardinals signed him as a free agent in the winter of 2015, giving him a large contract that will pay him $17 million in 2018, $16 million in 2019, and $15 million in 2020.
