Dozens of elephants and rafts have been deployed to rescue almost 500 people trapped by floods in a popular resort in southern Nepal, officials say.

Landslides triggered by heavy rains in Nepal and northern India had claimed dozens of lives by late Sunday, government officials confirmed.

The floods and landslides caused by torrential rains have killed at least 49 people across the country.

According to the minister, 15 districts in the south of the country were affected by the heavy precipitation and around 15,000 homes were flooded.

He also said they were using smaller crafts to cross the short but choppy sea to Spain in the hope of slipping in undetected. At least 121 refugees lost their lives while trying to reach Spain by sea this year, compared to 97 last year, the IOM said.

Ten more people were missing and the number of dead looked set to climb as large parts of the country were under water, officials said.

Almost 600 tourists, including 200 Indians, have been stranded in central Nepal's popular tourist district Chitwan due to flooding triggered by heavy rains that have claimed 49 lives, officials said today.

Districts including Jhapa, Sunsari, Saptari, Bara, Makawanpur, Rautaha, Bardiya, Chitin were among the worst affected in the incessant rains.

In a press release issued this evening, the Ministry of Home Affairs has urged the industrialists, philanthropists, and humanitarian and social organizations to provide relief including foodstuff required by the families in distress due to the natural disasters.
