Here's what you need to know about the latest Mexico travel warning. The warning said Americans have been victims of violent crimes, such as murder, kidnapping, carjacking and robbery in several Mexican states.

While Quintana Roo's advisory is now stricter, it isn't included among the most risky spots in Mexico, where USA government personnel are told to defer non-essential travel.

For years, both regions were largely insulated from the drug war violence that has engulfed other parts of Mexico, but this year they have each seen a major uptick in killings.

In Baja California Sur, which includes Los Cabos, the homicide rate has been on the rise since previous year. It also prohibits personal travel to all impacted areas by USA government personnel and their families. The violence has led to innocent people being killed as bystanders, the Los Angeles Times reported.
