The United States Soccer Federation announced Tuesday Jacksonville is among 34 cities under consideration as a host city for the 2026 World Cup.

The committee has contacted 44 cities and 49 stadiums to gauge their interest in hosting World Cup games and it'll issue a short list by late September.

The United States, which previously served as host nation in 1994, next continues the process of identifying its potential host cities.

The bid committee will narrow the list to 20 to 25 cities that will be submitted to Federation Internationale de Football Association, according to the announcement. Each venue included in the request has to have at least 40,000 seats for the group-stage matches, and U.S. Bank Stadium has 63,000.

The tournament would include at least 12 host cities, though the exact number remains undetermined.

The North American bid is expected to face competition for the 2026 tournament from Morocco.

When the US played host to the World Cup in 1994, the opening ceremony, four group-play games and a round of 16 game was held at Soldier Field.

The FIFA World Cup attracted an average of 53,592 people to each of its matches in Brazil in 2014, according to the organization's official web site.
