Hurricane Katia strengthens to Category 3

As of early Saturday morning, Katia was about 185 km west northwest of the Gulf Coast port of Veracruz, the NHC said. More than 60 people were killed, at last count.

The hurricane center said that Katia's maximum sustained winds are now down to near 40 miles per hour (65 kph) and that it is expected to drift east of the Sierra Madre mountains as it peters out.

Storm Katia weakened to a tropical depression on Saturday as it moved into the interior of Mexico, but it could still dump heavy rains on areas that have absorbed large amounts of precipitation and been shaken by a massive quake in recent days.
