Joe Paterno knew of Jerry Sandusky accusations before 2001, assistant told police

According to a police report obtained by CNN, by the time whistleblower Mike McQueary told Paterno he'd seen Sandusky performing a lewd act on a child in the locker room, Paterno had already received a similar complaint.

A report from Sara Ganim of CNN.com has cited evidence that bolsters the claim Penn State head coach Joe Paterno "knew years before Jerry Sandusky's arrest that his longtime assistant might be sexually abusing children".

This police report, which was written in 2011, was never mentioned in court by McQueary or the prosecution, in part because it was that legal team's strategy to keep the focus on Sanusky and away from Paterno and Penn State.

The legendary coach JoePa, as his fans knew him, died in January 2012 at the age of 85, shortly after he was sacked in November 2011 amid revelations that assistant coach Jerry Sandusky had sexually abused close to a dozen boys on the Penn State campus.

What did Joe Paterno know and when did he know it? In July 2013, McQueary testified about that same moment, saying Paterno "slumped back in his chair", was "significantly saddened", and even "dropped his eyes a little bit".

Attorney's for the Paterno family could not be reached for comment by CNN. For those who don't remember, McQueary reported to Paterno an incident he had witnessed in a locker room between Sandusky and a young boy. While Sandusky may be in jail, the public continues to receive more and more information that tell us just how things might have been at Happy Valley.

In a letter published by USA Today last September, Jay Paterno, Paterno's son and the Nittany Lions' current quarterbacks coach, stated that his father never enabled Sandusky and that he reported the 2001 allegation to the fullest extent of the law.

Penn State's former head coach had been asked under oath if he knew of any other allegations, to which he responded no.

In June 2012, Sandusky was convicted of 45 counts of sexual abuse involving 10 boys and was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison. This contradicts Paterno's Grand Jury testimony from 2012 where he said he wasn't aware of Sandusky's abuse until McQueary told him.

Paterno died in 2012, and there's been a lot of discussion about his legacy ever since. "I wish I had done more", was his response when he was sacked from his job after 46 years at the helm.
