NFL Ratings Down Nationally in Wake of Protests, But Up Locally

Earlier in the day, ratings for CBS' NFL doubleheader were up 4% from the same week past year. Boring games yes, but many stay away because they love our country. The pre-game show on CBS received its highest rating in seven years, while the network saw a four point surge across the board.

For last night's game between the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals, the Monday Night Football game received a 9.3 overnight rating for ESPN. Fox's afternoon game did a 10.3, down 16% from a year ago.

WHAT IT MEANS: In a world where TV viewing is increasingly fragmented and more people are watching on devices or saving programs until later, the majority of TV shows have smaller ratings than the year before.

That neutral rate dropped to 2.9 percent in the new forecast, down from 3 percent in the Fed's June forecast. The Fed , though, has yet to achieve its other objective of stabilizing prices at a 2 percent annual rate.

"Ratings for NFL football are way down except before game starts, when people tune in to see whether or not our country will be disrespected!"

BUT the game was also a blowout.

National Football League spokesman Joe Lockhart quickly retorted to the president's comments about players protesting the national anthem.

Dominica 'devastated' by Hurricane Maria
These islands can expect 6 to 9 feet of storm surge , which is often the biggest threat to life and property from a hurricane. It is worthy of note that meteorologists considered Maria a fourth category hurricane just a few hours ago.

Still, the dip in audience is hardly "way down" as Trump claimed again on September 24 in a separate tweet, on a weekend when he told a rally in Alabama that NFL owners should consider "firing" any player that kneels for the national anthem in solidarity with black America. That wasn't the case this past Sunday, as the growing protest of players to President Trump's tweets made the anthem newsworthy. Together, the pregame shows on CBS and Fox saw a 19 percent increase compared to a year ago.

That is an eight percent drop in viewership from the prior week's game when the Atlanta Falcons beat the Green Bay Packers, and a 10 percent drop from early numbers for last year's equivalent Sunday night game during the third week.

For football fans, though, chances are they were attracted by better games.
