Ahead of the likely Cabinet reshuffle over the weekend, five members of the Union Council of Ministers (CoM) resigned on Thursday evening.

While Mishra was a Cabinet minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Dattatreya was Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Labour and Employment and Rudy handled Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in similar capacity.

Reports said the BJP leadership is likely to bring back Rudy to the organisation set up by making him general secretary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be leaving to China to attend BRICS summit this Sunday and the last reshuffle before next elections is expected to happen this Saturday.

Sources said that it is only after after this development that these leaders have offered to resign from their posts.

Sources in the BJP said that a reshuffle may take place either on Saturday or sometime after the Prime Minister's return from China and Myanmar. While there was no official word about their meeting, it was believed in the party circles that the Cabinet reshuffle and political re-assignment of Union Ministers were discussed. Maurya is a part of UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath's Cabinet and one of the state's two deputy chief ministers. Former Union minister Venkaiah Naidu's urban development portfolio may be included in the rejig.

After meeting Shah earlier in the day, Jaitley suggested that he may not hold charge of the Defence Ministry for long.

Gas prices to continue climb
