The senior administration official who briefed reporters Thursday confirmed that the United States has fully complied with Russia's staff reduction order, and that visa processing - which was temporarily halted after the initial announcement - will resume shortly at a "much-reduced rate".

The State Department on Thursday announced that it will force the Russian government to close three diplomatic locations in the United States, in response to the Russian government's decision to expel 755 US diplomats from Moscow in July.

The U.S. embassy and consulates' employees are largely Russian nationals, and there were reports that some 600 Russians would lose their jobs because of the cuts while 100 Americans would be forced to leave their posts.
