A predominately black public school in MS that was named after Jefferson Davis now has a new moniker: Barack Obama Magnet.

For months, parents of students at Davis IB Elementary School, named after General Robert E Lee, fought to rid the school of its Confederate reference in favour of celebrating America's first black president, according to Newsweek.

"Jefferson Davis, although infamous in his own right, would probably not be too happy about a diverse school promoting the education of the very individuals he fought to keep enslaved being named after him", said Janelle Jefferson at a meeting with the Jackson Public Schools (JPS) Board of Trustees on October 17.

"We really wanted to know what they thought", Jefferson said. Students from each class at the school gave presentations on their favorite pick.

More than 90 percent of the students at schools named after Obama are black or Hispanic, according to an analysis of Department of Education data by Education Week.
