A top commander was among six foreign militants of Lashkher-e-Toiba (LeT) killed while one Indian Air Force (IAF) Garud martyred and a soldier injured in a fierce encounter in north Kashmir district of Bandipora, where protests erupted on Saturdayafternoon.

Two soldiers including an Air Force commando suffered injuries in the encounter and were hospitalized.

J&K Police chief Shesh Pal Vaid confirmed that six militants, including Lakhvi's nephew, were gunned down.

One of the terrorists named Owaid is the son of Zakir Rehman Maki and the nephew of Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi, he said on Twitter.

In another tweet, Vaid said LeT commanders Zargam and Mehmood were also killed in the operation.

Army's Srinagar based defence spokesman said, "So far five militants have been killed in the operation", which was a joint effort of the army, SOG and CRPF.

"As the search approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering an encounter", they said. He said the slain militants were from Pakistan.

Authorities had imposed curfew in parts of Srinagar on Saturday as a precautionary measure following killing of an Al-Qaeda terrorist Mugees Mir in a shootout with the police on Friday evening.
