Indigo Partners is a private equity fund led by Bill Franke, the 430 A320's would go to airlines in Indigo's investment portfolio: Frontier Airlines, Mexico's Volaris, European carrier Wizz Air Holdings Plc and JetSmart, which began operating in Chile this year.

Wednesday's deal will see the 430 aircraft split between the Phoenix-based equity firm's Frontier Airlines and three other ultra low-priced airlines, including Mexico's Volaris; Hungary's Wizz Air; and Chile's JetSMART. They are USA company Frontier Airlines, Mexico's Volaris, Chilean carrier JetSmart and Hungary's Wizz.

The order is the biggest single sale in Airbus' history, and is set to double its number of net orders this year - up from the 288 planes it had sold up until the end of October - pushing its total number of orders for 2017 to 718.

Airbus and Indigo Partners declined to comment.

The deal includes a new order for two aircraft, along with two others the airline announced as a commitment in June and which have now been converted into firm orders.

Clark suggested that either Emirates or discount carrier flydubai, which is also owned by the Dubai government, could be interested in a mid-sized jet that Boeing is considering developing.
