It's nearly time for this year's Supermoon!

It was not until 1979 that Astrologer Richard Nolle first invented the term supermoon.

A supermoon occurs when the moon is at its perigee in orbit, or its closest point to the earth.

The island's main airport is for now operating normally, but some airlines have cancelled flights. The alert was lowered on October 29 after a decrease in activity.

Early next week, the fourth and final supermoon of 2017 will be visible in the night sky. When an average apogee occurs, the moon is furthest from the earth at a distance stretching to roughly 252,000 miles.

According to, the moon will officially reach its fullest point at 8:46 a.m. MT this Sunday December 3.

Police respond to 'incident' at Oxford Circus Tube station
London's Metropolitan Police said there was no evidence of shots fired or casualties at the Oxford Circus tube station. Police responded to what they believe is a "terrorist related" incident at London's Oxford Circus Tube station Friday.

At that moment, the moon will not be visible over most of North America. On Sunday night, the moon should appear about 7 percent larger and 16 percent brighter than usual, though astronomers caution it can be hard to notice the difference with the naked eye. The variations in apparent size and illumination amount to few percent but they can improve the already incredible sight of the full moon, making a supermoon worth looking up for. Gurtina Besla, a professor at the Arizona University, said that the phrase "perigee syzygy" refers to the moon being at its closest distance to the Earth, and syzygy refers to the alignment of multiple bodies - the moon, Earth and sun need to be aligned for us to see a full moon. So a winter super-moon looks bigger and brighter than a summer - but it's often harder for anyone to enjoy because of bad weather.

According to NASA, there will be supermoons in both January and February of 2018. The big exception is spotting the moon just after sunset as the moon is beginning to rise in the sky.
